A Wildly Divided Nation and a Fiery Debate: Trump vs. Harris

The Trump-Harris debate is a nationwide hot topic at the moment. In this heated interaction, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris began their debate with a handshake before moderators Linsey Davis and David Muir ask their questions. Both candidates engaged in all sorts of rhetorical methods, one-upping the other with references to alleged failures in each other's careers. Topics covered include abortion, the housing crisis, immigrants to the United States (chiefly those from Latin America), Donald Trump in general, and more.

The debate was animated and memorable for its constant, fast paced flames between the two. The moderators even directly contradicted things Trump was saying, using it as a segue to another question.  Perhaps the most memorable quote from the debate so far was Trump's remark that "they're [immigrants] eating the cats. They're eating- they're eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what's happening in our country. And it's a shame," to which Harris visibly laughs. Muir adds that the city of Springfield, Ohio, which Trump mentioned alongside Aurora, Colorado, had no such records of such things happening.

Trump's narrative revolved around Harris' alleged ineffectiveness in her time as Vice President, For example, he points out that "they've [democrats] had 3 1/2 years to create jobs and all the things we talked about. Why hasn't she done it?" Trump also blasted current president Joe Biden for the same ineffectiveness, and frequently referred to not just Harris or Biden, but democrats at large.

These two interactions summarize each other's rhetoric during this debate, with both criticizing the other at every turn. While policy strategies were stated by both for the entire debate, an equal amount of time was spent criticizing the other.

Watching this debate was staggering for myself. I found myself more entertained than politically inspired. The sarcastic smiles, the remarks, the moderators having to keep the two of them in check, it was something to marvel at. I think that Trump was more on the defensive, especially since the moderators frequently contradicted him. While I find myself apathetic to politics, many have openly stated that it's irresponsible to not vote, especially if they are liberal or farther left. This debate didn't exactly swing me one side or the other, but it has been an interesting concentration of the hot topics that have flooded our media for so many years now. I think it's America's finest hour at this point, and this debate has very much reinforced that in the minds of many, myself included.
